USING AN FTP
CLIENT (third-party software with the File Transfer Protocol for sending/receiving files over Internet)
If you don't have an FTP Client Application installed on your computer,
then download one from Download.com
or Tucows.com
MAC OS:
Use Fetch or another FTP application.
WINDOWS: Use CuteFTP, WS_FTP or another FTP application.
NOTE: each FTP app has a different interface
and sometime uses different command or menu names, but you should be
successful following these direction and make any adjustments necessary
.

This is the interface for FlashFXP, an application
that will ftp files. Though different from other ftp program's interface,
here you can see the three critical pieces of information needed:
- url, domain name, or server address
- user name
- password
- Select New Connection or Connent
under the File menu.
- Type in the IP address or domain name in the
Host: box (see chart below).
- Type in the name and pasword in the Name
/ Username / ID and Password boxes (you can
get these from your instructor or a fellow student); they are case sensitive—pay
attention to the upper and lower case letters.
- Make sure the Directory box is empty
and that Anonymous login is not selected.
- Select OK / Send / Connect
- A window will open with the name of the IP

You may see many directories on the server but will only
be able to access those areas your password allows
- Double click on the name or icon for your class.
UPLOADING / DOWNLOADING
Students will not be able to see what's inside
of drop folders. This folder is for turning in assignments only.
So,if you get a dialog box or a status message
that states this (such as "denied") proceed anyway and you
should be able to send or drag your file to the folder.
You may have some icons or menu commands for sending (uploading)
or receiving (downloading) files. Sometimes you may be able to drag
the icon from your window to the remote window of the FTP client (or
vice versa) to transfer files.
Logoff by Quitting / Exiting the application.
USING A WEB BROWSER (Internet
Explorer) FOR DOWNLOADING ONLY; cannot upload files to the server this way
- Open Explorer and type the address (see chart below) into the Address / URL bar at the top of your browser window.
- For the address type ftp:// followed by the name and password separated with a colon
( : ) and then the @ symbol followed
by the IP Address. (e.g. ftp://username:password@208.2.169.24) NOTE: be sure to use only lower case characaters
when typing in name, password or domain names.
MAC OS:
Files and directories will appear within the window as a list of hyperlinks.
You will be able to navigate and only access those items permitted by
your username and password and the permissions setup by the System Administrator
of the file server.
WINDOWS XP:
Folders and files will appear within the window and can be viewed
as a list or as icons. You will be able to only access those items permitted
by your username and password and the permissions setup by the System
Administrator of the file server.
NOTES
- On some FTP sites, you can only view or download files.
- Only the people who run or own the site can rename, delete, or upload
files.
- On many FTP sites, you are automatically logged on anonymously,
so you can view or download files.
- To upload, rename, or delete files, you may need to log on using
a special user name and password.
- You cannot move files within or between FTP sites.
- You can move files from an FTP site to a temporary location on your
computer or a network drive, and then upload them to another FTP site
or different folder on the same site.
- Some programs may support opening and saving files from FTP servers
by typing an FTP address in the File Open or File Save dialog box
Uploading a File
to the Server:
After accessing your particular Class Folder
(see below), drag the items you wish to copy to the server from your disk
onto the icon that represents your particular class's Drop Folder.
Students DO NOT have access to open drop folders (they behave
like a post office mail box—you can drop stuff in, but you cannot see it nor get it
back out). This folder is for turning in assignments only if your instructor
so chooses. So, if you get a dialog box that states this, click OK or
press the return key on the keyboard.
Be sure to disconnect from the server before you
begin your work after you have uploaded or download your file(s). Do this
by dragging the desktop icon to the Trash or quitting your FTP program.
Downloading a File from the Server:
After accessing your particular Class Folder
(see above), drag the item(s) you wish to copy from the server to your
disk or to the Documents folder on the hard drive.
Be sure to disconnect from the server before you
begin your work.
IMPORTANT—Do
not work off of the server. By doing so, you slow down the network.
Be sure to disconnect from the server before you begin your work. You
break your connection by dragging to the trash can the icon which represents
your connection to the server.
