Policy:

Credit by Examination is a method for students to get credit for a course without having to actually complete the course. This is helpful for students who may have already mastered the material for a prerequisite or would like to accelerate their journey toward a degree or certificate by using their work experience or other knowledge / skill learned elsewhere.

This generally involves

  • presenting materials that demonstrates that you can do the type of work required in the class assignments (presentation of a portfolio of your work, comparable to the work done in the particular course)
  • scoring at least 80% on a comprehensive written test (multiple choice) for that class.

Both need to be accomplished. Do them in the order which is quickest and most convenient.

The written test can only be taken once. There is no retest. No pass…then take the class.

Currently, instructors administers the written test (it is timed); arrangements must be made ahead of time. In the future, the test may be administered by the Testing Center. After (or before) the student passes the test, the instructor looks over the portfolio.

Procedure

  1. Contact the Program Coordinator to make sure that an instructor is available to provide the examination to the student. This can be done by email or a simple phone call.
  2. Student fills out Credit by Examination form (available in the Registrar Ofice, any campus), takes to Bursor; pays $10 .
  3. Students brings stamped form to testing agent (Ed Kanet) and takes test.
  4. If score is 80% or better PASSED test.  Go to 4. If score is less than 80%, it's over.
  5. Instructor reviews student's work (portfolio). If there is not sufficient work done to demonstrate the student could do the classwork, it's over.
  6. Instructor signs Credit by Examination form.
  7. Student takes form to Admissions and Records.

Please note the hurdles:

  • The $10 fee must be paid BEFORE the process begins.
  • Must show a portfolio and pass instructor interview.
  • Must take a test; pass with minimum 80%.
