Winners' Bios


Junior Division
Southern Nevada Music Award
First Place
Hee-Jung Ra was born in Korea in 1990. Last summer she followed her parents, visiting scholars to UNLV and UNR, to Las Vegas. Since then, she has been a student of Mr. Jie Bu.
       Hee-Jung has been playing the piano for five years. She took first place in the Las Vegas 2000 Junior Piano Competition last December. Currently, she is a fifth grader at Selma F. Bartlett Elementary School.
Desert Arts of Nevada Award
Second Place
Winsey Lam is seven years old and is an excellent student in the second grade at Wengert Elementary School. She has been playing piano for two years and has been under the tutelage of Mrs. Damaris Alvarez during this second year. In addition to music, Winsey is also engaged in ballet, tap, and jazz dance. She enjoys performing for an audience and finds jazz dance to be her favorite. On her free time, she enjoys reading and drawing. Winsey hopes to teach kindergarten as well as tap and jazz when she grows up.


Intermediate Division
Venture Services Award
First Place
Dale Hargis is an eighth grader at Kenny Guinn Middle School. Currently he studies under the guidance of Roger Bushell.
       In addition to playing the piano, Dale enjoys the sport of fencing. He competes in national and international tournaments.
Desert Arts of Nevada Award
Second Place
Victoria Ngo is an eighth grade honor student at Molasky Jr. High School. At school, she is an active member of the CCSD Honor Orchestra and the Las Vegas Youth Orchestras.
       Victoria has been studying the piano since the age of six and is currently under the guidance of Mrs. Carol Stivers. Some of the competitions she has won are: the Search for Talent Contest, the Silver State Competition, and the Bolognini Scholarship Competition. In her spare time she enjoys reading, listening to music, laying around and thinking, and just spending time with her family and friends. At this moment, Victoria is unsure of her future plans, although hoping to pursue a successful career.


Senior Division
Southern Nevada Music Award
First Place
Victor Ngo is a fifteen year old honor student at Clark High School, the Academy of Math and Science. At school, he is currently a senator on the Sophomore Council, and a future vice-president in the Junior Council. Victor also plays the cello in the school orchestra, sitting in the principal seat in both the Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra. Other clubs that he is involved in are the Key Club and a volunteer in the Honor Society.
Venture Services Award
Second Place
Weston Arnold, age sixteen, is a native of Reno, Nevada. He has been studying piano for the last five years, three of them with his present teacher, Sonnet Johnson. His piano performances include the annual Reno Youth Music Festival, where he received their highest rating. He has performed in several master classes in Reno, with visiting artists/teachers. In June of 2000, he participated in an intense, week-long master class with pianist Daniel Pollack, in Washington. He was a finalist in the Albertson College Piano Competition, received second place in the Music Teachers' National Association Piano Performance Competition in Nevada, and received an honorable mention in the Festival for Creative Pianists.
       Weston is a sophomore at Bishop Manogue High School, where he has a cumulative GPA in all honors and upper level courses. During his freshman year, Weston played football for his school as a starting safety. He also enjoys wave-boarding, snow skiing, and playing basketball. In the future, Weston plans to attend college with a double major in piano performance and a field related to Physics/Engineering. Weston lives in Sparks with his parents, Elizabeth and Paul Arnold, and his younger sister, Tara.
