The 1st Annual Piano Concerto Competition 2000
Juror Bios

Augustin Anievas, Chair of Jury, was born in New York City. His mother, a piano teacher who had emigrated from Mexico's Yucatan Province, gave him his first piano lessons at the age of three and a half. Within six months, the four year old Anievas was ready to play publicly in a student recital, and from that day on there was no question but that he would make piano his career.
His orchestra debut came at eighteen, when he appeared as a soloist with the New York City's Little Orchestra Society. The young Anievas made headlines in 1961 as the winner of the First International Dimitri Mitropoulos Competition for Pianists in New York. At the time, his list of prizes already included many of the most prestigious awards in the world.
Audiences from around the world have had the opportunity to hear this sensitive artist in performance. For the last two decades Mr. Anievas has been working with young artists as Chairman of the Piano Department and professor at Brooklyn College, to instill the concepts of beauty and breadth in each performance, the importance of communicating with the listener, and offering a personal expression of the work.

Dr. Martha Marchena, is increasingly acclaimed as one of the most innovative and powerful pianists of today. A rising star of her generation, Marchena gained recognition early in her career for her command of the instrument and her artistic insight. Noted for the originality of her programming, critics have praised the intensity of her interpretations, as well as the emotional impact she brings to the audience.
Before immigrating to the United States in 1979, Marchena was one of Cuba's leading pianists. A versatile artist, she has performed as a soloist with orchestra and in chamber music ensembles all over Europe and North and South America.
Marcheno has kept a rigorous academic profile as prefer and coordinator of keyboard in the music department of Kean University. She has participated in residencies, giving master classes, lecturing and Fine recitals in universities throughout the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Spain.

Dr. Richard McGee, CSN Orchestra Conductor, is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana and received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Denver, where he studied conducting with Vincent LaGuardia. After conducting high school band for five years, Richard moved to Las Vegas in 1981 to pursue a music career on the Strip. He first worked at the MGM Grand, then later at the Tropicana, where he was lead trombonist and assistant conductor for the Folies Bergeres Orchestra. In 1989, Richard was offered his current teaching position at the Community College of Southern Nevada.
Since that time, he earned his doctorate in Education Administration from UNLV, was founding Artistic Director of the CSN Fine Arts Center, and is founder of the Nevada Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
In the first season of The Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra, he produced and conducted four concerts in the First Annual Youth Concert Series which he designed especially for the 5,000 fourth and fifth grade Clark County School students who attended the Ham Hall concerts. This season he expanded the Youth series to 6 concerts which were attended by 10,000 Las Vegas students.
