Juror Bios




Luiz de Moura Castro, Chair of Jury, born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he received his early training and graduated Summa cum Laude from the National School of Music. He continued his studies at the Liszt Academy of Budapest. De Moura Castro made his debut recital in the Teatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro, at the age of nine after winning a major competition.
       De Moura Castro has appeared with many international orchestras, including the Lisbon Radio Orchestra, Filarmonichi di Tunno, National Symphony of Russia, and the Dallas Symphony, as well as all of the major orchestras in Brazil. He has given recitals at concert halls around the world, including the Piccola Scala, Milano; Teatro Ghione, Rome; Salle Gaveau, Paris; Palau de to Musica, Barcelona; Salle du Conservatoire, Studio Ansermet, Geneva; Merkin Hall, New York; and Teatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro.
       Invited by Lili Kraus, to teach at Texas Christian University, de Moura Castro has lived in the United States for more than 25 years. He is currently full-time faculty of Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford and is head of the piano department at the Juan Pedro Carrero School of Music in Barcelona. He is also on the faculty of the Amalfi Coast Music Festival & Institute in Italy. Last year, he began a visiting professorship at Catholic University. Featured in Benjamin Saver's The Most Wanted Piano Teachers in the U.S.A., he has been invited as one of the master teachers and lecturers for the World Piano Pedagogy Conferences. His discography includes 20 albums for labels in Spain, Switzerland, Brazil, and the United States.




Dr. Ron Williams, Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Nevada, Reno, was reared in the Lincoln country of southern Indiana and has academic music credentials from Depauw and Indiana Universities where he was a student of Walter Robert, Sydney Foster, and Bela Nagy. He received double honors in the First International Gottschalk Concurso, for Pianists and Composers. He was awarded Master Teacher recognition by the Music Teachers' National Association, and was a founding member of UNR's Argenta Trio. He has appeared extensively as orchestral soloist and in solo and chamber music recitals in the Western states. Since his university retirement in 1998 he has continued private teaching and public performing. He has received a number of recent prizes for his compositions, and is much in demand as a piano adjudicator and clinician.




Geoff Neuman, director of the Green Valley High School Orchestras, Co-Director of the Las Vegas Youth Symphony, and eight years of teaching in the Clark County School District.
        Under his direction, the Green Valley High School Orchestra program has earned many honors including: National Grammy Gold Signature School (overall winner), and First Place at Music Fest Orlando, in the full orchestra category.
        Mr. Neuman has taken his groups to various locations from Orlando to Edinburgh, Scotland. In addition to conducting, Mr. Neuman is a professional bass player. He performs with the Las Vegas Philharmonic as well as many other types of performances such as jazz and substituting on and the show "Mama Mia" at Mandalay Bay.
        Mr. Neuman earned both his Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His professional associations include: American String Teachers Association; where he is the President-Elect of Nevada Chapter, Music Educators National Conference, International Society of Bassists International Association for Jazz Education and Nevada Music Educators Association.
