Recording Tech I, an introductory course in audio recording,
is being offered as an evening class at CSN!

The course number is MUS 231E, and the class meets on Monday from 7:30-10:20 PM.

This course lays a groundwork for music and sound recording, with theoretical concepts and terminology being covered. Primary topics explained are roles of individuals in recording, basics of the physics of sound, mixboard design and signal flow, microphones, and recording session procedures. A typical class period is one-half lecture, and one-half “lab” time, usually spent in CSN’s state-of-the art Control Room. This room features an SSL AWS900 mixboard, a new Mac Pro computer running a loaded version of ProTools and other software, multiple speaker pairs (including 5.1 Genelecs), and many outboard processors. Microphones used include Neumann, AKG, Royer, Shure, Beyer and more. We also have a lab with brand new Macs and ProTools installed, for additional hands-on training during class-times, as well as being available as an “open” lab outside of class-times.

As much as possible this course is oriented towards practical application in real-world situations. This includes spending the last 2 or 3 weeks of the semester doing actual recording sessions, typically involving a band or musical ensemble.

CSN is continuing to offer this course in 4 other class sections, on different days and times of the week. This course is the first of our three levels of audio recording technology, and is one of the courses needed to complete CSN’s Certificate in Music Business and Technology
