Emergency Medical Technician
(Basic & Intermediate)

The EMT-Basic and the EMT-Intermediate are an important part of the first responder care team.  The following is a breakdown of the various job responsibilities of each:

 


EMT-Basic
:  Patient assessment, basic airway management, oxygen therapy administration, fracture and spinal immobilization, and basic emergency care of critically ill and injured victims.

EMT-Intermediate:  Advanced emergency care of critically ill and injured victims in the field setting; provide fluid replacement utilizing intravenous therapy; limited medication therapy as indicated; and secure patient airway using basic and limited advanced techniques.

Emergency Medical Technicians at both the EMT-B and EMT-I level work indoors and outdoors.  In the field, they generally work in teams of two and most work rotating shifts.  Those employed in institutions and ancillary care will work varied hours.  EMT's are employed by: private ambulance services; fire department; hospitals; volunteer services and/or ancillary care.


Program Description

The College of Southern Nevada offers a step ladder approach to classes in Emergency Medical Training.  The EMT-Basic course has open enrollment to any CSN student 16 years of age or older and provides instruction in basic emergency medical care skills.  The EMT-Intermediate course offers advanced training with some advanced emergency medical care skills. 

In order to be admitted into the EMT-Intermediate (EMS 115B) training course, an individual must  have completed the EMT-Basic (EMS 108B) training sequence, be at least 18 years old, and attend the Department of Emergency Medicine mandatory meeting prior to attending class.

At the conclusion of coursework and prior to obtaining local employment, students must apply for licensure with the Southern Nevada Health District.

Admission Requirements

The CSN Emergency Technician program in an Open Entry Program, therefore, and application for admission is NOT required.  However, students enrolled in the program must show proof of American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR or American Red Cross CPR certification for the Professional Rescuer, health insurance, immunization against Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, & Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and proof of a negative two-step TB skin test. Drug screening will be required prior to the 3rd week of class. An official background check is required and a physical exam may also be required.


New Student Checklist
New students to CSN planning to register for this Open-Entry Health Science program should complete the steps outlined on the Checklist for New Students Seeking an Open-Entry Health Science Certificate of Completion.


Please note:  After registering for the courses, all EMS students must attend a mandatory EMS meeting prior to attending class.  Dates and times of the mandatory EMS meeting will be available during registration.
