The EMT-Paramedic(EMT-P) is an important health care worker providing highly skilled care to the patient before he or she arrives at a hospital facility.  In many instances, the care provided for the patient in the pre-hospital setting means the difference between life and death.  The field of Emergency Medicine is the ideal field for that individual who is seeking a physically and mentally stimulating occupation and who enjoys helping people during crisis situations.  Some of the responsibilities routinely performed by an EMT-P include:

  • Provide definitive, advanced emergency care of critically ill and injured victims in the field setting.
  • Provide fluid replacement utilizing intravenous technique.
  • provide pre-hospital medication therapy as indicated.
  • Secure patient airway using advanced techniques.

Program Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Paramedic Medicine consists of 51 credit hours of coursework.  The program is developed for those students who are seeking a career in pre-hospital emergency care, such as ambulance attendants, fire department, police department, search and rescue, highway patrol, and volunteer ambulance personnel.  The Paramedic Medicine Program at CSN meets or surpasses all national Department of Transportation requirements.

CSN offers a step ladder approach to classes in Emergency Medical Training.   Basic EMT classes have open enrollment to any student 18 years of age  or older and provides instruction in basic emergency medical care skills.  The EMT Intermediate course offers advanced training with some advanced emergency medical care skills.  In order to be admitted into the EMT-Intermediate training course, an individual must have completed the Basic EMT course and have a current Nevada EMT-Basic Certificate through the Southern Nevada Health District EMS office.  The Certificate of Achievement program provides students with advanced emergency medical skills training and offers a comprehensive, in-depth study of advanced life support skills.  At the completion of the three paramedic coursework semesters, the student may take the Southern Nevada Health District's certification examination.  Upon successful completion of this exam, the student will be state certified and able to work as a paramedic.   He/she may then choose to complete the next phase of the program and earn the Associate Degree in Applied Science/Paramedic Medicine.

Credentialing as a Paramedic
