Nature of Work

The Surgical Technologist is an important member of the surgical team who works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses and other surgical personnel delivering patient care and has responsibilities before, during, and after surgery.  Surgical technologists prepare the operating room, assemble, adjust and check equipment, operate sterilizers, lights, machinery, assist in preparation of patients, and position patients on the operating table.  Surgical technologists have a responsibility of maintaining the sterile field.  They most often function as the sterile member of the surgical team by passing instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery.

The one year program in surgical technology prepares students for employment in the following settings:

• Hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, ambulatory care areas, and central supply.

• Clinics and surgical centers.

• Offices of ophthalmologists, physicians, and dentists.

Program Description

The program requires 61.5 total credit hours for completion and includes both classroom instruction and clinical practice in surgical technology.  Once you have completed the required courses, you will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree, and will be eligible to take the national certification examination for Surgical Technologists.

Accreditation

CSN is fully accredited through the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology (ARC-ST) of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) since July 2001.

Admission Requirements

This is a Limited Entry Program.  Therefore, an application for admission must be submitted by the application deadline and all prerequisite requirements must be completed by the completion deadline in order to be eligible for consideration.  This material is reviewed using selection criteria set by the program.  Applicants are notified of their standing by the Limited Entry office.
