Nature of Work Veterinary technicians provide professional support services to veterinarians. A licensed veterinary technician's duties are those of a veterinary nurse, nurse-anesthetist, operating room technician, dental hygienist, medical laboratory technician, and radiology technician. The veterinary technician also performs administrative duties pertaining to the practice's management. Career fields for a licensed veterinary technician may include:
Program Description The College of Southern Nevada's Alternate Veterinary Technology Program is three semesters in length and leads to a Certificate of Completion in Veterinary Technology. Alternate program courses are offered through a combination of distance education classes(Internet/computer), video conferencing, classroom lecture, laboratory classes, and directed clinical practice in a veterinary hospital. Students should be computer literate for success in the program and should be prepared to work in groups as well as independently. A graduate of this program may sit for the National Veterinary Technology Exam and Nevada Veterinary Technology Exam. Upon passing both exams they may become a registered veterinary technician an be licensed in Nevada. Accreditation The program is approved and recognized by the Nevada Veterinary Medical Examining Board as having met the requirements of course content in Veterinary Technology. Reader Licensing as a Veterinary Technician Veterinary Technician in Training Information Admission Requirements The CSN Veterinary Technology Program is a Limited Entry Program. Therefore, an application for admission into the program must be submitted by the application deadline and all program prerequisites must be completed by the completion deadline in order to be be eligible for consideration. A letter of recommendation from a veterinarian, results of the PSB Exam, and proof of a high school diploma, GED or higher degree must be submitted to the Limited Entry Office by the completion deadline. This material is reviewed using selection criteria set by the program. Applicants are notified of their standing by the Limited Entry office. The following form(s) must also be submitted as applicants must
complete a minimum of 4,000 hours of documented veterinary clinical
experience to be eligible for this alternate program: Students First Checklist New students planning to register for courses at CSN must follow the steps outlined on the Students First Checklist. This checklist provides information on the registration process for new students seeking a Limited-Entry Health Science Degree or Certificate.
