Truncation... and Wild Cards - wahoo!
Truncation and wildcard symbols stand for one or more letters within or at the end of a search term.

Truncation *
Added to the stem of a word, a truncation symbol * will find that stem plus anything that comes after it.

market*
will return records on market, marketing, markets.

pig*
will return records on pig, pigment, pigmentation, pigments, pigskin, pigtails
advertis*
will return records on advertise, advertised, advertising, advertisement, advertisements.

* is the truncation symbol, for example, in CSN's Proquest and Ebsco databases and in the Thomson-Gale Literature Resource Center. The CSN Library Catalog needs no truncation symbol for Author, Title or Subject searchs -- it happens automatically: "Hem" will return:  Hem, John and Hemingway, Ernest. However, you can use * in a CSN Library Catalog Keyword search.

Wildcards ?
Wildcard symbols inserted within a word will retrieve word variants.
wom?n
will return records on woman or women.
organi?e
will return records on organize or organise.
rec??ve
will return records on receive--handy if you're not sure how to spell it!

?
will replace any ONE letter. It also works in the CSN's databases mentioned above and in a CSN Library Catalog Keyword search.
