COURSE DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to computer terminology, hardware and application programs for management information systems. Students are introduced to business, industry and education application of popular software using spreadsheets and word processors. "Hands on" experience is provided through student use of open lab. 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course serves as a stand alone course in Computer Information Technology. This is not the first course for students who plan on majoring in computers. The primary purpose of this course is to provide the student with a minimal level of knowledge about computer and computer applications in order to generate graduates that are considered to be "computer literate". Lab assignments on Windows, Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and Internet will be assigned to reinforce class lectures and/or labs. 

At the completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Explain the function of major PC components
2. Provide definitions of common computer technology
3. Operate Windows and use its command interface
4. Use a web browser to access sites, follow hyperlinks and search for information on a given topic
5. Use a word processor to enter, edit, format and print documents
6. Use spreadsheet software to enter, store, display, print and process data, including the use of functions and formulas
7. Use presentation software to create a basic slide presentation

READINGS/PRESENTATIONS AND HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:

There are no graded homework assignments in this course. However, “doing your homework” is the only path to success in this course. Homework in this course consists of:
viewing movies;
viewing PowerPoint presentations and any hands-on exercises;
repeating each skill until the skill is second nature;
experimenting with new features encountered each week

GRADING

4 EXAMS:
95% of your Final Grade.
ABSOLUTELY NO MAKEUPS
There will be four exams during the semester. Each exam will consist of multiple choice, matching, fill-in the blank, short answer and true & false questions. All accompanying book exercises and all lecture material must be considered “fair game” for the exams. Every effort should be made to take the exams at the announced times. Prof. Finch will assign a password for the test. No make-up exams will be given. All exams will be close-book and close-notes.

1 Comprehensive Final:
5% of your Final Grade. ABSOLUTELY NO MAKEUPS
Comprehensive final exam will include: multiple choice, true & false, fill-in the blank, short answer and matching questions and hands on using Windows, Excel, PowerPoint and Word. You will use Yahoo to send some of the exam items.

Professor will NOT assign a "W" to a student as a Final grade. It is the responsibility of the student to submit the proper paperwork to Admissions and Records in a timely fashion. Student will be assigned a CLASS GRADE, i.e. an A, B, C, D, or F. No W (Withdraw) or I (Incomplete).

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:

Addressing your Professor:   Out of respect for her, you can address her as:  Professor Finch or Professor Contreras de Finch
Professor dismisses class! If you leave early, and not inform the Professor, student is counted absent.
Sleeping in class results in an absence and also an immediate dismissal from the classroom for that class period.
NO (food) candy, (drinks) water, coffee, sodas
NO playing games (software programs) in the classroom, at ANYTIME, even if student comes in early in the classroom! The result will be an absence and also an immediate dismissal from the classroom for that class period.
NO cellular phones (turn them off). If your cell phone is not off, the student will be asked to leave the classroom and will result in an absence.
NO instant messaging (IM) in class even if student comes in early! Student will be ask to leave the classroom!
NO Laptop computers (turn them off).
NO beepers (put on vibrate position).
NO PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) or any kind of hand held computer.
NO headsets allowed during class. Student will be asked to leave the classroom.
NO vulgarity (even when upset at the computers) or viewing pornographic material on the INTERNET.
NO children in the classrooms (CSN policy).
During class, students can only read the class notes (no other textbooks). If students are reading any other book besides the class notes, the result will be an absence and also an immediate dismissal from the classroom for that class period.
Cannot stay in the classroom if Prof. Finch is not present (security reasons).
Students with documented disabilities may qualify for special accommodations, it is the student's responsibility to contact the Disability Resource Center located in the Student Service Center on each campus.

SERVICES:

TUTORIAL SERVICES: All CSN students are allowed 4 hours of free tutoring per one credit of coursework. Students enrolled in this course are entitled to 12 hours of free tutoring. To make arrangements for this benefit, student must take their semester schedule to Tutorial Services at the campus of your choice. The earlier student applies for help, the more likely the student will succeed.

RETENTION SERVICES: The Office of Student Retention (651-2626 at Cheyenne or 651-7367 at West Charleston or Henderson) offers a wide array of services and programs to help make your experience at CSN a successful and rewarding one. Among them are:
• Coyote Student Coaches - Free Tutoring on a walk-up basis during posted hours. Student Coaches are available in the D lobby at the West Charleston campus, in the student Lounge at the Cheyenne campus, and in the C building at the Henderson campus.
• Success Planning Appointments - The staff of the Retention Office is committed to helping you succeed at CSN by sitting down with you, assessing your needs and getting you plugged in to CSN's many resources.

DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTER: If you have a documented disability that may require assistance, you will need to contact the Disability Resource Center located in the Student Service Center on each campus. The DRC can be contacted at the following numbers: Cheyenne Campus 651-4045, Henderson 651-3086, and West Charleston 651-5089. For those students that would like to earn a little extra cash, stop by the Disability Resource Center to fill out a job interest card. This office hires students as note takers, readers, proctors, scribes, lab assistants, and research assistants as needed.

Academic Dishonesty: The CSN 2008-2009 General Catalog and Student Handbook it is written (See Appendix A, Student Responsibilities): "....Section 6.3 of the NHSE Code...Acts of academic dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating, plagiarism, falsifying research data or results, or assisting other to do the same." . In this class, cheating results in dismissal from the class with a grade of F.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURE(remember excessive absences?):
If leaving early, notify professor before class, if not, student will be counted absent! If student comes in late notify professor after class (or send an e-mail by no later then 8:00 pm of the day you came in late), if not, student will be counted absent! If student does NOT attend class, e-mail or call Professor Finch by 8:00 pm that day! If she does not hear from the student by 8:00 pm of the no show day, the student is considered unexcused. Remember there are NO make ups on tests or assignments!

REMEMBER ATTENDANCE IN THE CLASSROOM IS VERY IMPORTANT!
